Falcons Drop Opener.
The Notre Dame Falcons (0-1) fell 102-84 to Winston Salem State in it's opening contest in Winston Salem, NC on Friday night.
A new era of Falcons hoops began, as for the first time in ten years Kevin Bille was not coaching NDC. Tim Koenig takes over as the Falcons head coach in the 2013-14 season. It was also the Falcons first game since the departure of Eric Dummermuth. Dummermuth is the all-time leader scorer and rebounder in the brief history of Falcons hoops.
Winston Salem State came in ranked 21st in the country. The Rams and Falcons played a back and forth affair for the game's first ten minutes. The Rams led 25-24 halfway thru the first half before they ran off a 17-4 run that gave them a 14 point lead (42-28) with five minutes to go in the opening half. The Rams lead would be 13 (57-44) at the break. Torrid shooting was the story for the Rams in the opening frame. They shot 60 percent from the field and knocked down 9 of 17 from the 3-point line.
The Rams would make another big run in the second half that would give them a commanding 29 point lead (89-60) with 7:09 to play. The Falcons would get as close as 12 (92-80) with 2:39 left to go, and the Rams would cruise to victory.
NDC shot 46 percent from the floor on the night. They were just 5-18 from the 3-point line. Lawrence DeArmond paced the Falcons with 25 points on the evening, while Jarvis Huntley tallied 15 points, four rebounds and four steals. Tyree Gaiter rounded out the Falcons double digit scorers with 10. The Falcons shot 68 percent (17-25) at the foul line. They had 13 assists and 10 turnovers.
The Rams had four players tally double figures on the evening. Marquez Jones led the way with 31 points in just 25 minutes. Jones hit six 3-pointers. Preston Ross had a double- double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Victor Holloway chipped in 14, and WyKevin Bazemore netted 10. The Rams shot 53 percent from the floor on the night. They hit on 43 percent (11-26) from the 3-point line and made 67.4 percent (29-43) from the free throw line. The Rams dominated the Falcons on the boards 47-31. They had 14 assists and 15 turnovers.
NDC will be back in action Saturday when they battle Fayetteville State. Tip time is set for 6 PM in Winston Salem,NC.
