Taylor, Vorhees and Lewis Lift NDC to Fifth Straight Win!
The Notre Dame Falcons continued to stay hot by winning a fifth straight game Friday night. This time they rode three of their five starters to a 97-87 win over Malone at Osborne Hall in Canton. The combination of Kyauta Taylor, Will Vorhees and Ja'Sean Lewis combined to score 91 of the Falcons 97 points in the victory.
NDC (8-2) was led by reigning MEC Player Of The Week Kyauta Taylor who poured in a game high 45 points- tallied seven rebounds and dished out four assists in 39 minutes of action. Will Vorhees turned in another double-double (33 points and 14 rebounds-) while Ja'Sean Lewis nearly posted a triple-double (13 points, 13 rebounds and nine assists-) Lewis also blocked six shots. The Falcons shot 48 percent as a team- including shooting 38 percent (8-21) from the 3-point line. They were a solid 77 percent (13-17) from the free throw line. NDC crushed the Pioneers in rebounding 53-35. They had 19 assists and 17 turnovers.
Malone (4-6) had four players score in double figures in defeat. Christian Graves led the way with 21 points on seven 3-point baskets- Mitchell Spotleson and Ty Jordan each netted 17- while Nate Sheppard chipped in 13 in a losing effort. The Pioneers shot 44 percent from the field in this one. They shot 38 percent (16-42) from the 3-point line. The Pioneers only shot one free throw and converted it. They had 25 assists and 14 turnovers.
The first five minutes of the contest were evenly played. Vorhees would score seven of the first nine points but the Falcons would trail by one (10-9) at the 15 minute mark of the opening half. The next segment until the media timeout would belong to Taylor. Taylor would score the next 11 Falcons points and the game would be knotted at 20 at the 11:45 mark of the opening stanza.
Then the Pioneers would get hot from the 3-point line, as they would drill five 3-pointer's over the next 4:45 and go on a 21-6 run to take a 41-26 lead at the seven minute mark of the half.
NDC would turn up the defensive intensity over the next seven minutes and close the half on a 12-4 run to get to within seven (45-38) at the half.
The Falcons came out strong scoring the first seven points of the second stanza to even the game at 45. Once again the Pioneers would respond, this time scoring the next five to take a 50-45 lead. The Falcons would use a 8-0 run to regain the lead (57-52) with 14 minutes to go.
Once again Malone would get hot from the 3-point line, this time nailing three 3-pointers to spark a 17-4 run that gave them a 69-1 lead with 10 minutes to go.
The last 10 minutes would belong to the Falcons. They would use the scoring trio of Vorhees, Lewis and Taylor. But it would be the defensive end in the last ten minutes of this one that would secure the victory for NDC. They would hold the Pioneers to 7-24 shooting (29 percent) over the last ten minutes to get the 97-87 road victory.
NDC will be back in action on January 3rd when they welcome Glenville State to Murphy Gym. Tip time is set for 7:30 PM.
