Voorhees Jumper Lifts NDC Past West Virginia St.
The Notre Dame Falcons got a 81-79 win on the road Thursday night when Will Vorhees hit what proved to be a game winning shot with 31 seconds left at the Walker Convocation Center in Institute, West Va. With the victory NDC improved to 5-2 on the season. West Virginia State fell to 2-3 with the loss.
The Falcons were paced by another big night from Vorhees. He tallied 27 points- grabbed 19 rebounds- and- blocked six shots. Drew Scarberry added 22 of his own- while Kobie Johnson and Kyauta Taylor netted 9 points each. The Falcons shot 42 percent as a team- from the 3-point line they went 12-41 (29 percent.) Half of those 12 3-pointer's were by Scarberry. The Falcons shot at a 75 percent clip (9-12) from the free throw line. They had 19 assists and 13 turnovers. The Falcons had a 11 rebound edge (51-40) for the game.
The Yellow Jackets were led by four players in double figures. Ernest Jenkins led the way with 23 points- Brent Bauer nailed four 3-pointer's en route to his 17 points- Jayson Hankins tallied a double-double (13 points and 10 rebounds-) while Tyrie Elliott chipped in 10. West Virginia State shot 37 percent as a team- they went 17-40 (43 percent) from the 3-point line- At the free throw line they only shot 62 percent (8-13.) They had 18 assists and just eight turnovers.
The Yellow Jackets got off to a quick start in the game's first nine minutes and would lead 24-12 nine minutes into this one. The lead would still be at 10 (33-23) at the 6:26 mark of the half. After a Scarberry 3-pointer capped off a mini run by NDC the Falcons were within one (36-35) at the 2:13 mark. This would be part of a 19-9 run by NDC to close the half and the game would be knotted at 42 at the intermission.
NDC came out and scored the first five points of the second half to take the lead. Oliver Meggins 3-pointer would make it 47-42. The Yellow Jackets would get to within one (51-50) before a 3-pointer by Taylor gave NDC a 54-50 lead. The Yellow Jackets would then go on a 14-4 run and take a six point lead (64-58.) NDC would get right back into it on a pair of 3-pointer's by Scarberry to get them within one (67-66) at the 7:09 mark. The Yellow Jackets would maintain the lead though as the Falcons would trail by four (79-75) at the 3:14 mark. Johnson trimmed that lead to a pair (79-77) with 1:53 to go. Johnson would tie the game after buying a pair of free throws at the 1:32 mark. That would set up the game winning layup by Vorhees with 31 seconds to play. The Falcons would play solid defense on the last possession as the Yellow Jackets would not score despite having a pair of opportunities at the offensive end.
NDC will be back at home Saturday at 4 PM when they take on the Charleston Golden Eagles.
