Vorhees Big Day Not Enough For The Falcons.
Will Vorhees had a monster day, scoring 32 points and grabbing 12 rebounds but it was not enough for Notre Dame College in a 94-72 loss to #1 West Liberty on Saturday afternoon. With the win the top ranked Hilltoppers improved to 4-0 on the young season. With the loss NDC dropped to 3-1 on the year. The game was the Mountain East Conference opener for each team.
West Liberty had five players score in double figures on the day, including three who scored 20 points or more. Zac Grossenbacher and Devin Hoehn paced the Hilltoppers with 21 points each- David Dennis scored 20- Dan Monterosso posted a double-double (12 points and 10 rebounds-) while Brandon Smith scored 10. West Liberty shot 50 percent from the field in the game. They also shot it well from the 3-point line where they shot 46 percent (15-33.) The Hilltoppers shot 72 percent (13-18) from the free throw line. They out rebounded NDC 42-35. The Hilltoppers had 18 assists and just six turnovers.
NDC was led by the big day from Vorhees. They also got 11 points from Oliver Meggins and 10 from Ja'Sean Lewis. The Falcons shot 41 percent from the field and 34 percent (12-35) from the 3-point line. NDC was an abysmal 36 percent (4-11) at the free throw line. They had 16 assists and 12 turnovers.
The game was played very evenly for much of the first half. The first six plus minutes went back and forth, NDC would take a one point lead (9-8) at the 13:32 mark on a Vorhees jumper. After a West Liberty free throw tied it Oliver Meggins would nail a 3-pointer to give the Falcons a 12-9 lead. West Liberty would then go on a 11-5 run before another Meggins 3-pointer would knot the game at 20 with 8:32 in the opening half. The Falcons would again have a brief lead (25-23) after a Drew Scarberry 3-pointer at the 6:49 mark of the half. The #1 ranked Hilltoppers would close the half on a 17-6 spurt that would give them a nine point (40-31) halftime lead.
Kyauta Taylor would drill a 3-pointer out of halftime and the Falcons would be within six (40-34.) A pair of 3-poiner's would give West Liberty a 12 point lead. After being down 14 (48-34) Meggins would hit another 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 11 (48-37) with 17:07 to go. The Hilltoppers would remove all doubt with a 14-5 run to stretch the lead to 20 (62-42.) They would then cruise the rest of the way.
NDC will be back in action Monday when they take on #7 Wheeling Jesuit. Tip time at Murphy Gym is set for 7:30 PM.
