NDC Stays Perfect.
The Notre Dame College Falcons improved to 3-0 on the season as they escaped their home opener with a 89-80 overtime victory over Mercyhurst. The Lakers fell to 1-1 on the season after the loss.
The Falcons were led by the trio of Kayauta Taylor (25 points,) Will Vorhees (24 points and 12 rebounds) to go along with Kobie Johnson (18 points.) Ja'Sean Lewis only scored seven points, but he got a double-double with 11 assist and 12 rebounds. The Falcons shot 44 percent from the field and 36 percent from the 3-point line in the win. They were a solid 76 percent (16-21) from the free throw line- they had 19 assists and 12 turnovers.
The Lakers were led by four players in double figures. Durrell McDonald led the way with 28 points- DaJuan Dent added 16- while Malcolm Walter and John Majors added 10 points each. Mercyhurst shot 41 percent from the field and 38 percent from the 3-point line. They shot at a 84 percent clip (16-19) from the free throw line. The Lakers won the rebounding battle 41-40. They had 18 assists and 15 turnovers.
The game could not have started out any worse for NDC. After four minutes and seven missed shots they trailed 13-0. Lewis finally got NDC on the board at the 15:48 mark. Mercyhurst would grow that lead to 16 (27-11) at the 11:04 mark of the opening half. NDC would chip away at the lead and get to within three (41-38) at the intermission.
The second half would start much like the first did as the Lakers would open up a 11 point lead in the early going. NDC would come all the way back though and take the lead 63-61 at the 9:01 mark. Neither team would get a lead bigger than two the rest of regulation and the game would be knotted at 73 as it went to the extra frame.
NDC took control early and scored the first eight points of the extra period. It was a hard fought home opening victory for NDC.
The Falcons will be back in action Saturday when they head to West Virginia to take on #1 West Liberty. Tip time is set for 4 PM.
