NDC Edges Charleston Saturday.
The Notre Dame College Falcons got a big win at Murphy Gym Saturday as they beat previously undefeated Charleston 75-70. With the win NDC improved to 6-2 on the season and 2-2 in the MEC. While the loss dropped Charleston to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the MEC.
NDC was paced by Will Vorhees with 22 points and eight rebounds. Vorhees played all 40 minutes in the victory. Kyauta Taylor scored 19 points on the day- while Oliver Meggins had 12 big points off the NDC bench. The Falcons shot 39 percent from the field in the victory. They shot just 26 percent (6-23) from the 3-point line. The Falcons were solid at the free throw line where they shot 79 percent (11-14.) NDC won the rebounding battle 46-40. They had 15 assists and just eight turnovers.
The Golden Eagles were paced by a 23 point effort from Keir Anderson- Elliott Cole scored 19- and Justin Coleman scored 15 to go along with 11 rebounds.
Charleston shot 41 percent from the field and went just 7-31 (22 percent) from the 3-point line. They did make good on all 11 free throw attempts. The Golden Eagles had 16 assists and 10 turnovers.
The Falcons come out hot and would take a 16-4 lead in the game's first seven minutes. They would extend the lead to 16 (23-7) eight minutes into this one. A Nathan Kellum dunk would give NDC it's biggest lead of the game (32-15) at the 7:22 mark of the opening half. The Golden Eagles would respond with a 16-4 run of their own to get to within five (36-31.) The Golden Eagles would end up taking a 39-38 lead into the locker room.
Charleston would open the second half on a 10-4 run to take a seven point lead (49-42) before a Vorhees traditional three point play would get NDC to within four. NDC would fight back once again and would eventually take a one point lead (55-54) on a pair of Taylor free throws just past the halfway mark of the second half. The game would go back and forth for the next few minutes and the Falcons would take a 65-64 lead after a Meggins layup with 4:48 to go. NDC would have a three point lead a couple minutes later and Kellum would get a big tip in to give them a five point lead (71-66) at the 2:15 mark. NDC would score the next bucket and it would be a three point game with 1:28 to go. A Golden Eagles layup with 24 seconds to go would make it 71-70. Kobe Johnson would two crucial free throws at the 20 second mark. After getting a defensive stop at the other end Meggins would ice the win for NDC with a pair of free throws.
NDC will be back in action Wednesday when they take on Edinboro at Murphy Gym. Tip time is set for 7 PM.
