On a night when second leading scorer Nick McCartney could not find his range, Eric Dummermuth picked up the slack in the Notre Dame Falcons 70-56 win against Malone at Murphy Gymnasium Wednesday. Dummermuth, the Falcons super Sophomore from Dover, OH was 11 of 17 from the floor and 11 of 13 at the charity stripe to net a career high 33 points. Phil Biggs was a perfect 6 for 6 from the floor for his season high 12 points. McCartney who is the second leading scorer for Notre Dame at 11 points a ball game did not hit a shot from the floor and was held to 5 points. Notre Dame had a very good shooting night going 26 of 53 (49%) from the floor. The "blue and white" struggled from three point land going just 2 of 10. They were 16 of 22 (73%) from the charity stripe in winning for the second straight game in conference play.
Malone fell to 2-4 on the season. The Pioneers had a pair of players in double figures. Ebiowei Porbeni led Malone with 17 points on 8 of 11 shooting. The Pioneers leading scorer Eric Coblentz had 11 for the visitors. Coblentz was only 3 off 13 from the floor and could not find his touch from long range, going just 2 of 10 for the Pioneers. Vaso Aleksic led the Pioneers with 12 rebounds. Malone was 21 of 54 from the floor (39%) including just 8 of 27 (30 %) in the second half. Malone was 5 of 23 (22%) from long distance. The Pioneers did not help themselves going 9 of 14 (64%) at the foul line.
The two teams played even for a half. Malone had the lead twice and the score was tied twice in the first half. Malone's first lead was at 17-16 midway thru the first half. Led by Dummermuth the Falcons would take a 26-21 lead with 5:18 in the opening half. The Pioneers would make a mini run at the end of the half and the Falcons would have a 33-32 lead going into the locker room. The Falcons would come out hot in the second half and a Will Townsend transition bucket with 14:42 in the game would give NDC a 9 point lead at 45-36. The Falcons made their first 11 shots of the second half. The Pioneers would make another run though and with 8:30 minutes to go the Falcons lead was cut to three 51-48 on a traditional three point play by Ebioewi Pobleni. It looked as this one would go down to the wire as Malone would cut the lead to 57-56 at the 2 minute mark. The Falcons would score the final 13 points in the game for the 70-56 victory.
The Pioneers would win the rebounding battle 39-28. The Falcons would have 13 turnovers that cost them 20 points. The Pioneers had 21 turnovers that cost them 27 points. Notre Dame was plus ten with a 36-26 edge on points in the paint. The Pioneers had a 7 point edge (15-8) on second chance points. The Falcons had a big edge in transition. Notre Dame had a 14-2 edge in fast break points. The Pioneers dominated the bench scoring outscoring the Falcons 27-10. The Falcons will be back in action Saturday for a 4 PM tip against the Bulldogs from Adrian (Mich) (2-6) at Murphy Gymnasium.
