Poor Shooting Falcons Fall to Panthers.
The Notre Dame College Falcons game with the Panthers of Ohio Dominican was a tale of two halves on Wednesday evening. Ultimately the Panthers would roll to a 89-69 victory.
NDC (2-1) played a solid first 20 minutes, but were not able to keep pace on either end in the final 20 minutes. NDC was paced by a 30 point effort from Tyree Gaiter. Gaiter added three assists and three steals but turned the ball over six times. Lawrence DeArmond added 18 points, while Najeeb Johnson added 11. Will Vorhees added 12 rebounds.
The Panthers (1-2) tallied four players in double figures. Mark Minch led the way with 22 points- Chad Nelson notched 20- Trent Weaver scored 15- and Mike Deleon put up 12.
The Panthers led the entire way in the opening half but were not able to put away the Falcons. Although the lead never did change hands the half did see six ties. The biggest lead for the Panthers was nine (35-26) before the Falcons would reel off the next nine points to knot the game at 35. The Panthers would take a four point lead (39-35) into halftime.
The Falcons would get a 3-pointer from Vorhees on the opening possession to cut the deficit to one (39-38) but that is as close as they would get. Ohio Dominican would stretch the lead to 10 (53-43) after a Falcon stretch that saw them shoot just 30 percent for the opening five minutes of the half.
The Panthers would stretch the lead to 14 (61-47) before they would go on one last spurt. This time a 12-4 run cut the Panthers lead to six (65-59) but that is as close as NDC would get. The Panthers would score the game's next nine points to put it away.
The Falcons shot 35 percent on the game (25-72) but could not find the stroke from the 3-point line where they only shot 13 percent (3-24.) NDC also hurt themselves at the foul line shooting just 55 percent (16-29.) The Falcons had just nine assists and turned it over 10 times.
The Panthers shot 53 percent from the field on the game. This included shooting at a 61 percent clip (19-31) in the second half. The Panthers only shot 23 percent (3-13) from the 3-point line. They were a solid 73 percent (22-30) at the free throw line. The Panthers enjoyed a 49-39 rebounding edge. They had 16 assists and 14 turnovers.
NDC will be back in action with the Mountain East Conference Opener as well as the home opener at 4 PM at Murphy Gym. Tip time is set for 4 PM.
