Where Are They Now: Nick McCartney
It's hard to believe it has been seven years since Nick McCartney played at Notre Dame College. He was on the team until 2010 when he transferred to Youngstown State.
McCartney, who currently lives in Morgantown, West Virginia and is a native of Newton Falls played in the AMC Championship game in his first season with the Falcons when they fell to national powerhouse Walsh College. I believe he was one of the best guards that the NDC program has seen in it's young history.
Q: Where do you work?
A: I have a government position that I can not disclose publicly.
Q: What brought you to Morgantown?
A: This is where I was stationed for work.
Q: Was your NDC team as closely knit as it seemed when you got to the Championship Game of the AMC in the 2008-09 season?
A: Yes, we had a good core group of guys coming into my freshman year with Phil Biggs- Eric Dummermuth- Steve Savel- and- myself. We really bonded and gelled after we got our first year of experience and made a great run at the championship.
"Coach Kevin Billie did a great job (especially in the first two years) of setting up some events outside the basketball court so we could familiarize ourselves with each other." McCartney stated. He added:
"Ultimately it builds lifelong friendships and builds trust".
Q: How do you think your teams would have done if they played in the Mountain East Conference?
A: They are in tough conference right now and doing pretty well in it as well. With that being said, we had some nationally ranked teams that were on top of the conference year in and year out. We would be highly competitive, and on any given night any team can be beaten. To be highly successful in conference play though you have to protect your home court.
Q: Do you still follow the program?
A: I try to follow the program as much as possible. Whether it be through internet articles or on the team's website.
Q: What did the school and coaches teach you that you still use to this day?
A: I had some of the greatest experiences of my life at NDC and it really helped me become the man that I am today. From the coaching staff, to the administrative staff, whom I can still use as references. They really helped mold me in a successful direction and helped me prepare for a life after basketball. As an 18,19,20 year old kid that is an afterthought. I want to thank the program for that.
Q: What can we do to get more alums to come back for more events and games than they do now?
A: They just have to be more aware. It is still a young program that will continue to grow with time. It is a busy world in the workforce. Guys move away and start families. It is hard to balance time.
Q: How good do you think the 2017-18 team can be?
A: Coach Koenig has been doing a great job of getting some really good recruits in the last couple years. They are heading in the right direction and will continue to progress.
