NDC Comes Up Short Again On The Road.
As unbeatable as the Notre Dame Falcons have looked at Murphy Gym this season, the opposite has been the case on the road. Things did not change in that respect Monday night as the Falcons fell 90-72 to the Fighting Falcons of Fairmount State in West Virginia. With the loss NDC fell to 0-5 in true road games on the season. The win was the third straight in conference play for Fairmount State.
NDC (7-5 3-3 MEC) was led by a trio of players in double figures. Tyree Gaiter led the way with 25 points- Lawrence DeArmond chipped in 13- while Najeeb Johnson tallied 11. The Falcons shot 52 percent for the game- 46 percent from the 3-point line. They shot at a 77 percent clip (13-17) at the foul line. NDC won the rebounding battle 31-27. They had eight assists and 18 turnovers.
The Fighting Falcons (7-5 4-2 MEC) shot 54 percent from the field- 40 percent from the 3-point line- and went 16-20 at the foul line. They had 20 assists and just seven turnovers (all in the second half.) The Fighting Falcons had three players tally at least 20 points. Jamel Morris and Thomas Wimbush poured in 22 points a piece- while Nick Harney added 21. Caleb Davis also posted 11 for the Fighting Falcons.
Both teams got off to hot starts Monday. NDC would make the first seven shots they took, six being before the first media time out. Despite the hot shooting NDC would hold a slim 15-13 lead at the initial media timeout at the 14:36 mark.
FSU would then go on a 10-2 run to open a 10 point lead (25-15.) They would stretch that lead to 16 (43-27) at the 6:17 mark of the opening half. NDC would get to within nine late in the opening stanza but FSU would hold a double digit lead (54-42) at the half. FSU did not commit a single turnover in the opening stanza.
FSU would stretch the lead to 20 (74-54) over the first seven plus minutes of the second half. FSU would then cruise to the 18 point victory after that.
NDC will be back in action Thursday as they will once again try and pick up that elusive first road win of the season when they take on West Virginia Wesleyan. Tip time is set for 7:30 PM.
