Falcons Streak Snapped.
The Notre Dame Falcons rallied late but could not stop Shepherd from coming away with a 90-81 win at the Butcher Center. The Rams improved to 15-6 and 10-5 in the MEC with the win. The win gained a split of the season series between the Falcons and Rams for Shepherd. With the loss NDC had it's three game win streak snapped and fell to 9-12 overall and 7-8 in the MEC.
The Falcons placed four players in double figures in the loss. Jarvis Huntley led the way with 21 points for the "blue and white." Tyree Gaiter continued his recent scoring binge scoring 20- Kaloma Figueroa Jackson chipped in 14- while Lawrence DeArmond scored 10. The Falcons shot 41 percent from the floor and and went 11-38 (29 percent) from the 3-point line. NDC shot 71 percent (12-17) at the free throw line. They had 12 assists and 15 turnovers.
The Rams had five players score double figures on the evening. Marcus Pilgrim led the Rams with 21 points- Naim Muhammad just missed 17 points and nine rebounds. Morgan McDonald had a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Austin Cunningham chipped in 15, and Brantley Osborne rounded out the double digit scorers with 10. The Rams shot 49 percent from the field and struggled from the 3-point line where they were 4-18 (22 percent.) The Rams were superb at the foul line where they shot 90 percent (18-20.) They dominated the rebounding battle 45-35. They had 13 assists and 15 turnovers.
The Falcons got off to a quick start on this night and led 13-9 five minutes in. The Rams then went on a 10-2 spurt and led by four (19-15) three minutes later. The Rams extended that lead to seven (36-29) at the half.
The Rams stretched the lead to 10 (44-34) with 17:30 to go. The Falcons then went "ice cold" and the Rams would extend the lead to 19 (64-45) with a little under nine minutes to go. NDC would score the next nine points and would cut the deficit to 10 (64-54.) after a Gaiter 3-pointer. NDC would get as close as four (82-78) on a Figueroa-Jackson lay-up with just under a minute to go.
The Rams would make 10 free throws in the final minute and come away with the win. It was a little payback for the Falcons 82-77 win back on January 4th.
NDC will be back in action on Saturday when they battle Fairmount State at 4 PM in West Virginia. It will be the first meeting of the season between the two teams, as the first meeting at Murphy Gym was postponed back on January 6th.
