Walsh Outlasts Falcons.
The Notre Dame Falcons (9-15 4-8 AMC) gave the top ranked Walsh Cavaliers (24-0 13-0 AMC) all they could handle Saturday at Murphy Gym before falling 84-74.
The loss extended the Falcons losing streak at Murphy Gym to five straight. Eric Dummermuth led the Falcons with 26 points and 13 rebounds. The double-double was the seventeenth of the season for the Sophomore from Dover,Ohio. Dummermuth was 11-12 at the free throw line. Three other Falcons scored in double figures. Curtis McClure scored 14 points to continue his recent surge of late. Rodney Mickens and Taylor Reiger netted 12 each for the blue and white. The Falcons shot 45% from the floor while nailing 6 of 15 three's. The Falcons shot 72% (18-25) at the foul line. The Falcons had 13 assists and 14 turnovers as a team.
The Cavaliers used a balanced attack to post a 24th straight win. All seven Walsh players who saw action scored and six of the seven scored double figures. Lamar Skeeter led the way with 18 points. 16 of the 18 came in the opening stanza. Jeremy Shardo added 14 while Ron Kinney and Eric Schiele added 13 each. L.J. Sutton and Terrance Saintil rounded out the double digit scorers with 12 each. The Cavaliers shot 47% in the game. They made good on 10 of 23 triples (45%) including 7 of 10 in the second half. Walsh shot at a 67% clip (20-30) from the foul line. The Cavaliers won the battle of the boards 37-36. Walsh had 15 assists and 11 turnovers to compete the season sweep of Notre Dame.
The Falcons come out hot early in the contest and led 8-2 four minutes in. NDC led 14-10 with 12:44 in the opening half but Walsh countered with a 12-4 run that put them up 22-17. Walsh would lead by 5 (33-28) at the half. Both teams struggled shooting the ball in the opening half. NDC shot 40% to 38% for the Cavaliers in the opening stanza. NDC was 9 of 11 at the foul line in the first 20 minutes.
Walsh came out in the second half and took command with some solid three point shooting. The Cavaliers opened up a 22 point lead (67-45) but the Falcons would not go away. A 17-4 run by the Falcons got them to within 8 (75-67) at the 1:45 mark. Rodney Mickens had a three point attempt rim out that would have cut the lead to 5 and that would be as close as the Falcons would get. The Falcons will be back in action Tuesday night when they host the Cougars of Mount Vernon Nazarene (13-11 6-6 AMC). Tip time is set for 5:30 at Murphy Gym.
