Baran Trey Lifts Tars Past Southern!!
For the past 3 seasons the Sunshine State conference has become a two team league. Those two teams squared off at Warden Arena on Saturday afternoon possessing the second ranked and 20th ranked teams in division 2. After the number one ranked squad from Central Missouri fell earlier in the weekend Florida Southern had a chance to take over the top ranking with a win at Rollins. It was a back and forth affair throughout. Southern jumped out early to a 19-10 lead in the early going. Then Myk Brown scored 19 of his Tar high 30 points over the next five minutes as the Tars opened up a 44-26 lead. Southern would come back behind the hot shooting of Rion Rayfield and Terry Jenkins to cut the Tars lead to 48-43 at the half. The game would go back and forth in the second stanza. A Terry Jenkins 3 would tie it with 16 seconds to go to set up Baran's heroics. Nikola would hit a three from a step behind the three point line with 2.8 seconds left for the game winner. A desperation heave by Rayfield as time expired would seal it. Rollins had three players in double figures on the afternoon. Myk Brown led the way with 30, Nick Wolf added 26 and Matt Robertson would post 12 for the Tars. Southern was led by 31 from Terry Jenkins and Rion Rayfield chipped in 24. Andre Hawkins had 17 and Brandon Jenkins 10 to round out the double digit scorers for the Mocs. The shooting was sensational in this one for both teams. The Tars out shot Southern 51- 42 percent. The Mocs were 18-35 from behind the arc while the Tars went 10-27 from long range. Southern won the rebounding battle 33-29. Turnovers were another big story. The Mocs had 14 to just 10 for the Tars. The Tars will be back in action Wednesday night at Warden Arena against the Sharks of Nova Southeastern. Tip time is 7:30.
