Falcons Win Season Opener.
The Notre Dame Falcons opened up the 2016-17 men's basketball season with a 96-87 win over West Chester on Friday night
NDC placed five players in double figures, including three eclipsing 20 points on the evening. Will Vorhees led the way with 27 points- Drew Scarberry added 24- Kyauta Taylor chipped in 21- while Kobie Johnson and Ja'Sean Lewis netted 11 points a piece. The Falcons shot 55 percent from the floor- and 44 percent (16-36) from the 3-point line. NDC shot at a 71 percent clip (12-17) from the free throw line. The Falcons had 23 assists and 15 turnovers. They also had 10 steals, including five by Taylor. The Falcons also had nine blocked shots, led by four from Vorhees.
West Chester had four players in double figures. The Golden Rams were paced by 19 points from Matt Penecale- Ryan Skovranko and Dashon Giddings each scored 17- while Mike Jolaoso added 17 of his own. West Chester shot 38 percent as a team and 46 percent (12-26) from the 3-point line. The Golden Rams shot 82 percent (23-28) at the free throw line. The Golden Rams won the rebounding battle 41-33. They had 12 assists and 14 turnovers.
NDC came out hot in the game's first ten minutes and took a 11 point lead (28-17) early on. The Falcons would lead by as many as 15 (37-22) with 8:08 in the half after a Scarberry 3-pointer. The Golden Rams would battle back and take the lead with just under a minute left in the opening half. Scarberry hit a 3-pointer with 23 seconds left in the half and that gave NDC a 50-49 halftime lead.
The first two minutes of the second half would see the Golden Rams take another brief one point lead (54-53) before a 9-0 NDC spurt would give the Falcons a 62-54 lead. NDC would go three minutes without a field goal, but then would get hot again and after a Johnson jumper they had a 13 point lead (73-60) at the 10:15 mark. NDC would cruise the rest of the way, leading by as many as 17 points before posting the victory.
The Falcons will be back in action tomorrow at the West Liberty tournament when they take on Cheyney State. Tip time is set for 530 PM.
