Falcons Second Half Rally Falls Short.
The Notre Dame Falcons dug themselves a 19 point hole in the first half at Southern Indiana and it would be too much to overcome. Despite cutting the lead to one behind some hot 3-point shooting in the second half the Falcons would ultimately fall 95-84 in front of 1100 people in Evanston,Indiana.
The win ran the Eagles record to 5-0 on the season. Four players scored in double figures on the evening for Southern Indiana. Orlando Rutledge paced the Eagles with 22 points, while Taylor Wischmeier chipped in 19. Aaron Nelson netted 18 and Kenyon Smith had 12 in the victory. The Falcons shot 53 percent from the field but just went 4-16 (25 percent) from the 3-point line.
The Eagles shot 66 percent (23-35) at the free throw line. The Eagles won the rebounding battle 33-28, they had 17 assists to go along with 11 turnovers.
The Falcons fell to 2-5 on the season. NDC had five players score in double figures on the evening. Eric Dummermuth led the way with another double-double (19 points and 11 rebounds). Lawrence DeArmond scored 18, Marcquice Taylor scored 14, Raphi Tekie and Jarvis Huntley scored 10 each. The Falcons shot the ball well on the night. They shot 46 percent (32-70) from the field and nailed 50 percent (12-24) from the 3-point line. The Falcons got to the foul line just nine times making eight (89 percent.) The Falcons had 15 assists and 10 turnovers.
The Eagles scored the first six points of the game and led 18-11 just over six minutes in to the opening half. It was 22-18 before the Eagles would go on a 19-4 run to take a 41-22. That would be the lead for SIU at the half when they led 53-34.
The Eagles would stretch the lead to 16 (67-51) with 14 minutes left to go. The Falcons would go on a 9-0 run in the next minute to cut the lead to seven (67-60) with 12:53 to go. Raphi Tekie would nail a 3-pointer and it would be a four point game (69-65) midway thru the second half. The Falcons would not be done yet as Lawrence DeArmond would hit his fourth 3-pointer of the night and it would be 71-70 Eagles. The Eagles would go on a 8-0 run and stretch the lead to nine. NDC would cut the lead to four on a couple occasions but that is as close as they would get.
The Falcons will be back in action Friday when they head to Gannon,PA when they battle Gannon in the Porreco Cup. Tip time is set for 7:30 PM.
