Big Second Half Lifts Mercyhurst Past Falcons.
The Lakers of Mercyhurst (4-3) outscored the Falcons of Notre Dame College 42-33 in the second half en route to a 80-64 win at Murphy Gym Wednesday evening.
The Lakers had a pair of players score in double figures on the evening. Luis Leao led the Lakers with 21 points and seven rebounds, while Jonathan Ouegnin had a perfect night scoring 15 points on 5 of 5 shooting and also went 5 of 5 at the free throw line. The Lakers shot 52 percent from the field for the night and hit 46 percent (5-11) 3-pointers. The Lakers were 18-24 at the foul line. The Lakers dominated the rebounding battle 40-24. They had 16 assists to go with 16 turnovers.
The Falcons fell to 2-4 on the season. They had three players score in double figures. Eric Dummermuth led the way with 20 points and eight rebounds. Lawrence DeArmond chipped in 11 points, while Tyree Gaiter tallied 10 points and four steals. The Falcons shot 40 percent from the field and hit 7 of 20 (35 percent) from the 3-point line. The Falcons shot 74 percent (17-23) at the foul line. They had 14 assists and 13 turnovers.
After a close first half, the Lakers shot 62 percent (13-21) to win against the Falcons for the first time since 2005.
Mercyhurst was the hot team early on as they jumped out to a 9-2 lead early in the game. The Falcons would fight back and knot the game at 16 on a 3-pointer by Raphie Tekie with 11:12 in the opening half. The Lakers would reel off the next six points and lead 22-16. They would lead the rest of the half. It would be 38-31 Mercyhurst at the break.
The Lakers would take advantage of a cold shooting Falcons team in the early stages of the second half to stretch the lead to 12 (47-35) with 17:10 left. The Falcons would fight back once again and go on a 8-0 run to cut the deficit to four (47-43) on a Tyree Gaiter 3-pointer.
The Lakers would go on a 11-0 run to take control with 9:52 remaining as they led 58-45. The Falcons would not get any closer than eight the rest of the way.
The Falcons will be back in action Saturday when they travel to take on Southern Indiana. Tip time is set for 8 PM in the Hoosier State.
