A Tough Finnish To Inaugaural Season.
The Notre Dame Falcons finished up the first season of varsity football with a 32-0 loss to Urbana at Korb Field. The Falcons had plenty of positives during their 2-9 first season of football. Heading that last was Pedro Powell. The Freshman from Liberty,OH had 84 yards on 19 carries. With those 84 yards Powell became the first player in Falcons history to eclipse the 1,000 yard plateau. Powell finished with 1,006 yards on the campaign.
Derrick Paster led the receivers on Saturday and for the season. The Sophomore from Berea had 5 catches for 39 yards in the finale. James Flowers who took over the reigns as the Falcons starting quarterback after the first month did not have one of his better outings Saturday. Flowers, the Freshman from Strongsville was just 8 of 20 for 48 yards and one interception. Bo Grunder led the defense with 10 tackles.
The game was scoreless for the first quarter. The Blue Knights would get on the board with 8:57 remaining in the opening half. Josh Turnbo's 2 yard TD would give a 6-0 lead to the Blue Knight as the PAT would be blocked. The Blue Knights would add one more touchdown right before halftime. This time it would be Evan Morrisey who would catch a 6 yard strike from Evan Gehlert to make it 12-0 Blue Knights at the half. Once again the PAT would fail after a botched snapped.
Another TD by the Blue Knights would come with a little over 8 minutes to go in the third quarter when Traylon Tailor would intercept a James Flowers pass and run it back 35 yards for a score. This time the Blue Knights would go for two and once again fail to make it 18-0. D.J Mendenhal would catch a 30 yard TD pass that would cap a 75 yard drive that would make it 24-0 UU. The Blue Knights would fail on this two point conversion as well. The scoring would be capped in the beginning of the 4th quarter with 13:47 to go as Jerell Leak would catch a 3 yard pass from D.J. Mendenhahl. Finally the Blue Knights would convert on a point after TD as the two point conversion would account for the 32-0 final.
Josh Turnbo and D.J. Mendenhahl would lead the ground attack for the Blue Knights. Turnbo would have 73 yards rushing on 12 carries and a score. Mendenhahl would account for 46 yards on 13 carries.
The Blue Knights would get solid quarterback play on Saturday. Evan Gehlert was 12 of 16 for 146 yards and a score. In the second half they would turn to Mendenhahl and the backup QB for the Blue Knights was a solid 16 of 19 for 96 yards and a pair of TD's. Jerrell Leak hauled in 8 passes for 100 yards and a TD. Matt Hightower had 9 grabs for 80 yards. drew Underwood and Travis Brisco led the Urbana defense in the shutout. Underwood had 8 tackles. Brisco stuffed the staff sheet with 6 tackles, 4 fumble recoveries and a pair of sacks.
Urbana had 242 yards passing to the Falcons 56. Total offense was dominated by the Blue Knights. They had 407 yards of total offense while holding the Falcons to just 126. Each team committed 7 penalties. The 7 penalties cost the Falcons 73 yards while the 7 miscues cost UU 59 yards. The Blue Knights were 8 of 18 on third down while the Falcons were just 1 of 12. This was the 11th and final game of the season for both teams. Urbana finished the year at 5-6.
